How do I know I am saved?

In John 3:16-21, Jesus states, "For God so loved the world, that he gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.  For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.  He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.  This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil.  For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.  But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God."

John 10:9-11 Jesus states, "I am the door; if anyone  enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.  The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have  life, and have it abundantly.  I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep."

Made Alive in Christ
Ephesians 2:1-9 Paul says, "And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience.  Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.  But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
For grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is a gift from God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast."

Titus 3:4-7 Paul states, "But
when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life."

What are we being saved from?

1) a life separate from God- Jesus is the only way to the Father.  John 14:6 Jesus says,
"I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me."

2) sin and death- Romans 3:23 "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus" Romans 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Romans 6:14 "For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace."

3) guilt, shame, condemnation- Romans 8:1 "Therefore there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus."  For the law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death."

4) slavery to the Law- Galatians 4:5 "so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.

Galatians 4:7 "Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God."

5) darkness- John 8:12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life."

6) judgment- All of God's wrath was poured out onto Jesus.  We have already been judged on the cross.  The New Testament speaks about judgment only to those that do not believe.  In Christ, we stand before God as righteous and holy saints.  1 Cor. 1:30 " But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption."

We were all saved on the cross.  Jesus is the Savior of ALL mankind (1 Timothy 4:10).  It is the realization of this truth-the awakening-that manifests the life of Christ already in us.  See also blog called Jesus Saved ALL.

What does the finished work of Jesus Christ mean?

When Jesus was hanging on the cross, John 19:30 captures this moment: "Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit." These were the last words that Jesus spoke in the flesh.  This marked the beginning of the New Covenant by which we are now under grace and not under the Old Covenant of the law.

Matthew 27:50-51, "And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.  And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth shook and the rocks were split.  The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised." Also noted in Mark 15:38 and Luke 23:45.

When the veil (Jesus' flesh) was torn, Jesus opened the gateway to heaven and constant fellowship between God and believers in Christ.  Jesus was the first to ascend to heaven.

2 Corinthians 3:15-18 Paul says,"But to this day whenever Moses (law) is read, a veil lies over their heart; but whenever a person turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.  Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.  But we all , with unveiled face, beholding in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory,  just as from the Lord, the Spirit."

Hebrews chapter 8 and 9 describes the
Old and the New Covenants in detail.  Hebrews chapter 10 is also full of greatness.

Paul's letter to the Romans goes into great detail about being dead to sin and alive to God.  Romans 6:14, For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace. John 1:16-17, For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace.
For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.

Paul describes us as a new creature (creation in some versions).  2 Corinthians 5:17, "Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come."

The new creation is detailed under the word of God section.

The finished work of Jesus on the cross began a New Covenant between man and God replacing the Old Covenant.
God loves YOU unconditionally and desires an intimate relationship with you.  In Ephesians 2:13-19, Paul writes, "But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.  For He Himself is our peace, who made both groups into one and broke down the barrier of the dividing wall, by abolishing in His flesh the enmity, which is the Law of commandments contained in ordinances, so that in Himself He might make the two into one new man, thus establishing peace, and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, by it having put to death the enmity.  And He came and preached peace to you who were far away, and peace to those who were near; for through Him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father.  So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God's household,"

This marks the beginning of our union with God through the blood of Jesus on the cross.  Jesus is the door! and the way! and truth! and the life! No one comes to the Father but through Jesus. (
John 10:9 & John 14:6)

The finished work of Christ on the cross made us righteous, provided eternal forgiveness, and seated us at the right hand of the Father.  Whether we believe or not, this happened 2000 years ago.  It is finished!  :-)  Believing it will release the manifestation of the life of Christ already in us.  Amen!

It is important to remember that while Jesus was still alive, the Old Covenant was still in place.  All of Jesus' words, including the Lord's prayer asking for forgiveness, were said prior to the beginning of the New Covenant.  There were still animal sacrifices taking place in the temple.  The shedding of blood from the perfect lamb, once for all, had not taken place yet.

There is further detailed information on the New Covenant and what it means to the believer in Christ.
