The Second Letter of John

During the first two centuries A.D. the gospel was taken from place to place by traveling evangelists and teachers. Believers customarily took these missionaries into their homes and gave them provisions for their journey when they left. Since Gnostic teachers also relied on this practice, 2 John was written to urge discernment in supporting traveling teachers.
John wrote this letter shortly after the first letter, about A.D. 90.
John writes of how important it is for Christians to love one another. To love means to obey God's commandments, and God's commandments in turn tell us to live lives of love. Resting in Christ and allowing His will to come through us is the only we can keep all commandments. Even so, it is not from our works but from His. Jesus came to fulfill the law. Let's get out of His way and allow His will and works to produce an abundant harvest. John again emphasizes the importance of the doctrine that Jesus is God's Son - both God and man. Christians should separate themselves from those who teach that Jesus is not God's Son.
